The thought of having Turmeric Latte for health reasons was so foreign to me I had no intention of ever trying one. It's funny how we can place a thought into our heads that we would not like something and therefore never even try it. When I had my most recent Crohn's Disease flare up I knew that Turmeric was really good for inflammation, however I was taking it by mixing it with some water and to be honest it was blah!
The thought crossed my mind that I would try and create a Turmeric Latte so I mixed together some turmeric powder, fresh ginger, black pepper and a little honey and heated it with Almond Milk. Still quite blah!
I then stumbled across Alchemy Golden Turmeric Elixir and it actually looked good in the bottle. I wondered if I should both spending the money and if it would taste as good as it looks in a latte? So I did. And I was glad I did. That's my bottle below and as you can see I'm getting near the end of it. Yes! I discovered that Turmeric Lattes are actually rather delicious and good for health.
I mix mine with unsweetened Almond Milk and about 20mls of the Turmeric Elixir, the latte is sweet and comforting, especially on a cold morning. I have my latte plus other supplements prior to eating breakfast and I am enjoying this latte nearly as much as my coffee latte I have with soy. Maybe even more!
If you are a fan of Chai Latte, I think you might like a Turmeric Latte. I am yet to perfect making it from scratch but I figure if I can use this syrup which actually tastes delicious I might as well save myself time.
Turmeric for Health Reasons
Turmeric has been used as a central component in Asian cooking for thousands of years and thought to have potent healing properties. The spice is used in the ancient Indian system of medicine, Ayurveda. However, it's not actually Turmeric itself that has the benefits rather it is curcumin, a compound within turmeric that research as found contains some antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. source
I also add Turmeric and black pepper to my cooking (where appropriate) to get enough of the spice into my system. As well as my Turmeric Latte I have a morning ritual that I do before I eat breakfast. Below is a list what I am using to calm my inflammation as well as eating an anti-inflammatory diet.
My pre-breakfast list:
Slippery Elm Powder (1 tsp mixed with 1/8 cup water). This is not easy to swallow but I do it because it lines my stomach. It's almost like eating a jelly of paper bark.
Probiotic powder or tablet.
120ml organic Aloe Vera Juice.
1 tsp of hemp seeds.
Rub 1 tsp of hemp oil into my skin.
Turmeric Latte
Slither of fresh ginger
As with anything, you can form a habit within 21 days and as much as the above my sound not the most appetising thing to wake up to, I have found that I look forward to each little ritual because I can feel it calming my stomach. My last Crohn's flare up as taught me that I just can't go off my anti-inflammatory diet or my supplements because the pain and fatigue is just not worth it. When I flare up I lose so much energy and my work suffers. As someone who is self-employed that's ok because I don't have to worry about telling my boss I need to stay home but guess what? I don't get paid if I don't work and that adds to my stress. The last few weeks of my life have been terribly hard to manage, but I feel I am back on the mend and I know that this is a lifestyle that I just have to keep. No excuses!
