Homemade Toothpaste with Cloves and Peppermint Oil

Recently I had an infection on the right side of my face and I couldn't tell if it was toothache, earache or just a saw throat. I did have a swollen lump on my neck and I could tell it was to do with the pain and also for my general feeling unwell.

I did a bit of research on the internet and stumbled across a few home remedies. One of them was to use an oil (coconut oil, olive oil or sesame oil) in the morning and swirl it around inside your mouth between 5-12 minutes each morning. Then spit it out in a bag for the bin (don't put it down the sink or you will block your sink).

I've been doing this for a while now and I can honestly say my mouth has never felt so clean, I don't know how it works, but it does! It's now the first thing I do when I get up. Rinse your mouth with water and expel the water too, just to clear away the toxins. This is an ancient Ayurvedic method called "Oil Pulling" and claims to rid the body of toxins, not just for dental problems but also for skin conditions, arthritis, asthma, headaches, hormone issues, infections, liver problems and whitening teeth. Personally, my teeth are much shiner and my mouth feels very clean. Here's what a dentist thinks about oil pulling.

The second thing was to use cloves to kill the pain and infection. So I ground up some cloves in olive oil and placed it inside my mouth on the right side (making sure I did not swallow any of the cloves or oil). The next day the pain was gone and the swelling was gone and I never ended up at the dentist or doctor. I was actually gobsmacked. So I decided that I might try and make my own toothpaste because I'm on a bit of a healthy detox thing at the moment, including ridding my home of toxic cleaning products.

I've played around with this and finally came up with a recipe that I love. I haven't been using conventional toothpaste and using this instead and I swear my mouth has never felt healthier and fresher. Here's my recipe.

Makes enough for up to 3 days (twice a day).

8 - 10 cloves

1 tsp of Sea Salt

5 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil

A few drops of Rose Water

Put all ingredients in a mortar and pestle and grind until a smooth paste.

You only need a little bit on your toothbrush and brush for 2-3 minutes. Expel as you would with normal toothpaste, and rinse your mouth out with water and expel that too. NEVER swallow this mixture. Keep up your normal routine of twice daily flossing. Store the paste in a little air tight container.

Now let's get the legal stuff out of they way. I'm not a doctor nor dentist and my homemade therapies are not a replacement for your doctor or dentist so please get the professional advice you may need for your health.
