Fear: Is It Stopping You Living?

My mum used to fear death, she was terrified to die and I used to tell her don't worry, no one really ever dies. I guess she knows more than I do now because she's crossed that barrier. I am a great believer in life after death; too many things have proven to me that life does continue after this one, and if you have read any of my other blog posts you will see why.

My inspiration for this post is the quote by Mark Twain, “The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time."

The fear of life! Let's face it, we all, at some stage, have gone through some pretty scary times where fear just consumed us. I know I have in my time. Many times I've been frozen in fear due to personal circumstances or relationships. However, I always had a secret weapon to get me out of that state, and it's what I call 'flip thought' meaning I would think the exact opposite of what I was fearing. It's this mind control that has fashioned the person who I am today and I like that person. She still has her faults, but most of the time she does ok!

Sometimes the fear of life can be the fear of success! True, it happens, people hold themselves back because they fear if they are successful they won't be able to handle it, or their family and friends won't like it. The truth is that once you take control of your life, once you decide to make the most of every moment, and once you stop worrying what other people think, then you are in control and living life to the fullest. I took a risk starting this blog because I know a lot of people will think I'm some sort of new age nutter! Possibly it might put people off working with me on my lifestyle blog, but I decided that it didn't matter what anyone else thought of me, because I don't care, who has the right to judge me? What right have I to judge them?

One of my favourite blogs is Channeling Erik, I admire Erik's mum so much - Elisa Medhus who is a physician and mother of five who has practiced internal medicine for over thirty years. Erik was a young man that took his life and somehow found a way to communicate to his mother from the afterlife. Elisa went on to start a blog that could easily have damaged her reputation as a doctor because it's about channeling spirits, but she took the risk and thousands and thousands of people are comforted by that blog.

I have also taken many other risks in my life which were foolish, and cost me dearly, but at the end of the day I faced my fears, I gave it a go and I believed in myself. I dream big, and so I should, and so should you.

Are you afraid of dying? I am afraid of dying in pain but I'm not afraid to die. I would say that I lived my life to the fullest, I have explored, I have tried, I have suffered, I have taken risks, I have laughed, I have cried - all of those things and each experience has brought me closer to where I am now.

The bottom line is FEAR is a wasted emotion and I'm not talking about the real fear of your life in danger, I'm talking about the fear that stops us living our lives to the fullest i.e.

  • The salesperson who won't pick up the phone

  • The administration assistant who won't ask for a pay raise

  • The would be entrepreneur who is scared to give it a go

  • The person who wants to go sky diving but can't bring themselves to try it

  • The person who regrets not asking the person they fancied because they were scared of rejection

  • The person who wants to start a blog but is scared they will get laughed at

And the list goes on!

Death comes to all of us, there is no escape. Billions have gone through it before, we just need to focus on living our life to the max with love and gratitude and not being afraid to live. Don't let fear stop you. Just live now...there is nothing else but RIGHT NOW.
