Essential Oil For Oral Hygiene

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

Oral hygiene using Young Living Thieves

I have always been a big fan of using cloves for oral hygiene and was delighted to discover that using Young Living's Essential Oil, Thieves, has helped me with a few problems. Most recently a painful mouth ulcer (canker sore) on the tip of my tongue. I dispensed a couple of drops in rainwater (I'm fortunate that I live on a property that has rainwater tanks) ensuring the water is pristine. After swilling a couple of mouthfuls in my mouth, the ulcer pain disappeared. As well, my mouth felt refreshed.

Thieves for oral hygiene

Thieves® essential oil is a powerful combination of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils for an aromatic blend that fills any space with a rich, spicy aroma. Inspired by the legend of four 15th-century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination composed of clove, rosemary, and other botanicals used while robbing the dead and dying, I know that is repulsive; apparently it helped cover up the terrible odour.

Thieves oil has an irresistibly spicy scent and is versatile for keeping your oral hygiene shipshape without the risk of nasty chemicals. If you are considering a low tox lifestyle then here are a few more tips for using Thieves essential oil for a healthy mouth. TIPS FOR USING THIEVES FOR ORAL HYGIENE
Thieves for oral hygiene
  • Add a drop to your toothpaste for fresh breath and to avoid bacteria that can cause bad breath. Rinse your mouth thoroughly after.

  • Dilute a drop with coconut oil and rub on gums to help combat gingivitis. You can try applying directly however that might be a little too intense.

  • If you are suffering pain from a toothache try applying a drop on a cotton tip and gently rub the tooth (only temporary method until you get to the dentist).

  • Make your own gargle for sore throats by adding a few drops to water and swish in the mouth a while then expel. Never swallow essential oils.

  • As I said at the start of this post I used a gargle for a mouth ulcer you can also add a few drops to coconut oil and swish that around and expel.

  • Take flossing to the next level and soak your dental floss in a few drops of Thieves to help kill bacteria and keep your mouth fresh.

Finally have you ever tried oil pulling? Also known "kavala" or "gundusha," and is ancient Ayurvedic dental technique to pull bacteria from the mouth. You can add a few drops to coconut or olive oil and swirl around for about 20 minutes. You must expel it into a bag and bin it rather than in the sink as oil will block drains and should never be put down the sink.

Never ingest essential oils and always dilute them in a carrier oil before use.
