Poached Pears in Orange & Cider

  • 6 cloves

  • 1 small bottle Pear or Apple Cider

  • I large orange, juice squeezed into cup and Two twenty cent piece sizes of zest thinly sliced

  • ½ tsp vanilla (pure vanilla extract is best)

  • 1 tsp Allspice

  • 2 pears: peeled, halved and cored

  • Yogurt & any almond or sunflower seeds to serve

Combine the the cloves, cider, the juice of the orange, vanilla, allspice and finely chopped orange zest (more if desired). Bring to the boil, turn down and carefully place pears. Cover and simmer 40 minutes turning and keeping a careful eye that the liquid does not turn into syrup and burn.

Pears should be tender by 40 minutes, if not continue to cook slowly until tender. Remove pears and with lid off the pan reduce the liquid to make a sticky syrup.

Serve the pears with yogurt and topped with almonds, or sunflower seeds or even a little brown sugar.
